General Guidelines for writing a paper using MLA format
  • Double Space
  • Leave 1 space after a period
  • Margins should be 1" on all sides
  • Indent the first line of a paragraph one-half inch (press Tab once) from left margin
  • Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right hand corner one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin (your teacher may not want you to number page 1)
Formatting Page 1 of your paper
  • Upper left hand corner - list your name, the course, the date
  • Double space between name block and title, center title on page
  • Double space between title and first line of text
Other Tips
  • Avoid using "I, you, me" in a formal research paper. Do not write in the 1st or 2nd person. Write in the 3rd person.
  • Make sure each paragraph has a topic sentence and at least 3 or 4 supporting sentences.
  • Cite all sources of information used, in the paper, and in the Works Cited.
